Environmental Policy
BST recognise that all manufacturing processes have a direct effect on the environment and that energy use from UK businesses contribute significantly to greenhouse gases and consequently, to climate change.
For our part, the aim is to reduce the impact of our products and services on the environment through a policy based upon education, self-regulation, and continuous environmental improvement while using resources more efficiently in order to conserve energy. Waste is monitored at every stage of the supply chain in order to prevent occurrence or reduce to the lowest possible levels.
Consumable items are recycled, including cardboard, papers, plastics, and print cartridges, resulting in less waste going to landfill. Only contractors licenced in accordance with the latest environmental regulations remove our waste products from site. By reusing boxes and packaging which come in from suppliers, BST reduce the need for ‘virgin’ packaging and recycle materials that would otherwise be sent to landfill. BST also encourage customers to recycle products wherever possible, going so far as to promote and provide pen recycling boxes for the return of empty, used pens. The pen bodies, once returned to BST, are then used for recycling, transforming disposed pens into new pen bodies or other moulded products.
While our products have been specifically developed in response to customer needs, they have also been engineered to offer durability. Durability is a key aspect of sustainable design as the longer a product lasts, the less energy and raw material is needed to produce a replacement.
While the primary requirements of our products are to perform a specific function, be safe to use, hygienic, and reduce the risk of contamination, this is often achieved by sealing components so that there are no removable parts. This may often require the product to be disposable but quality materials are used to optimise product life and alternative product options are available where the critical benefits of our products can be maintained.
Time is put in to researching energy efficient lighting, technology, and vehicles to limit the impact on the environment. This includes motion sensor lighting in the warehouse as well as timed heaters with push-button activation. In addition, we have invested in the installation of solar panels. By generating renewable energy on-site, we are reducing our reliance on non-renewable electricity sources and lowering our overall carbon footprint. This supports our commitment to sustainable operations, reduces long-term energy consumption, and contributes to a cleaner environment for the future.
Since the implementation of a new Integrated Management Systems (IMS), BST has become virtually paperless. All communications are conducted digitally, and all documentation is stored within the IMS or in digital files wherever possible.
